UN Urges Halt To Discrimination Against Disabled Persons

The United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Ambassador Jan Eliasson, has called for actions to reduce exclusion and discrimination against persons with disabilities.

Making this plea at the just-concluded Eighth Conference of States Parties to the

Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in New York, Jan Eliasson added that persons with disabilities should be duly empowered, stressing that empowering them and securing their rights would advance society as a whole.

Saying that all human beings were equal, the United Nations deputy chief stressed that there was a constant need to live up to this assertion of human dignity.

He also said that the world body was working to shape an inclusive, accessible and sustainable society for all, guided by a new vision for development for the next 15 years that member states will adopt in September.

Welcoming the focus on mainstreaming the rights of persons with disabilities in the post-2015 development agenda, the UN top official encouraged all to work out global indicators that reflect the rights enshrined in the convention.

“The tragic fact is that persons with disabilities are among the most excluded and isolated in practically all regions of the world. We need urgent action to reduce exclusion, inequality and discrimination,” he said.

Eliasson pressed further that it was critical to address the vulnerability of persons with disabilities.
