Flying Eagles’ future still bright —Adepoju, Lawal
Former Nigeria internationals, Mutiu Adepoju and Garba Lawal, have said the Flying Eagles players still have a bright future in football despite crashing out in the second round of the FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand.
The African champions lost 1-0 to Germany, the European champions, on Thursday. A first half goal by Levin Oztunali was all the Germans needed to get their quarterfinal ticket at Nigeria’s expense.
Adepoju told our correspondent on Thursday that he was unhappy with Nigeria’s’ early exit from the tournament but said the consolation was that the team lost to a good side.
He said, “We have a good team that could have gone far in the World Cup. It is just unfortunate that they were eliminated by Germany, a very good and disciplined side. Our team tried, but some lapses in the defence caused the goal that eliminated them from the tournament. The players still have a bright future.
“Nobody should say the players are not valuable just because they lost out at this stage; the progression of the players should be monitored.”
Lawal commended the team, saying they still represent a great future for Nigerian football.
He said, “I’m not disappointed with the players at all. They lost to a good side. The Germans are good; they have scored 16 goals and conceded two. That shows that they have tactical discipline. I’m not disappointed in the Flying Eagles because in football you win some, you lose some. I see a great future in most of the players.”
The former Super Eagles midfielder added that Taiwo Awoniyi and a few other players in the Flying Eagles should be given a chance in the Super Eagles as soon as possible.
