525 undergo cataract screening, surgery in Ogun
No fewer than 525 patients were screened for cataract and underwent free surgery in Ogun State during the eight-day free eye screening organised by the state government in collaboration with INDO Eye Care Foundation and Rotary Club International.
The Permanent Secretary, Ogun State Hospitals Management Board, Mrs. Modupe Olurin, stated this at the State Hospital, Ijaye, Abeokuta, at the grand finale of the programme.
She said the collaboration between the state government and its partners was aimed at giving succour to citizens who suffered such impairment and could not afford the cost of undergoing such screening and surgery.
She said, “Undergoing eye surgery usually costs much, which most of our people, especially those in the rural areas and the aged might not be able to afford.
“It is based on this that we have been collaborating with non-governmental organisations that have the expertise to carry out eye surgery on them.”
Olurin said proper care, good general hygiene and regular eye check-up remained ways of eradicating blindness.
In his own remarks, the team leader, INDO Eye Care Foundation, Mr. Yogesh Nail, explained that since it began operations in Nigeria in 2005, his organisation had carried out close to 20,000 cataract surgery.
He said the programme would be repeated in 2016.
Nail commended the state governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, for his support, describing the people of the state as very accommodating.
A woman, Mrs. Kemi Mukaila, whose six-year-old boy, Saheed Mukaila, benefitted from the programme, commended the organisers, saying her son had suffered cataract from birth but due to financial constraints, he had not received proper care.
Another beneficiary, Mrs. Adewale Esther, also commended the state government for the gesture.
